Exploring Argentine Tango

Join us at “Denbigh Community Center” in Newport News, VA. for an evening of Argentine Tango!

This will be a fun, informative and inclusive workshop hosted by Candace Wolf and it’s guaranteed to benefit students of all levels. We will meet at dance room #128 on Saturday, May 18 from 4:30 to 9pm.  These classes will be led by professional guest instructors Edwin Roa and Lynda Buechel.

During the evening Edwin & Lynda will be offering 3 open group classes of 55 minutes each, and a 90 minute guided practice.

Everyone is welcome! There will be something for everyone. Check it out:

Classes and descriptions:

Tango 101  - 4:30-5:25pm

A taste of Tango

Ideal for beginners, this class will provide an overview of Argentine Tango. It will explain distinctions of music and dance styles, and it will provide participants with basic patterns and foundations of body mechanics. (No experience needed; partners are not required.)

Tango 201  - 5:30-6:25pm

Embracing Tango”     

This particular class will focus on connection and navigation. Although it’s open to everyone, a basic understanding of patterns will be required.

Through fun amalgamations, students will be taught how to deliver/interpret common elements such as “Ochos, Sacadas, Ganchos, etc.”  (partners are not required, but they are encouraged)

Tango 301  - 6:30-7:25pm

The game of Tango

Ideal for intermediate and upper levels, this class will explain popular tricks and games typically displayed in parties or milongas.

Students will be taught an amalgamation that includes multiple elements and uses counterbalancing actions. (experience is needed; partners are not required, but they are encouraged.)

Practica Z  - 7:30-9:00pm

During this hour and a half, the floor will be open for general dance. This time could be treated as Q & A, or simply open dancing. Students will be encouraged to explore ideas and practice their own repertoire. Edwin & Lynda will monitor the music and offer suggestions along the way. (It is important to note that this session will be open to all levels, and people will be expected to be social and exchange partners.)

Please be advised that due to the nature of these classes, we strongly suggest to wear appropriate attire and suitable dance shoes.

Beginner Nuevo Tango Class

Introductory series to Nuevo Tango.

This class is ideal for those seeking to understand and learn the current version of Tango known as “Tango Nuevo”.

This fusion dance is performed to contemporary music, and it combines structures of traditional Argentine Tango styles such as Milonga, Salon, and Vals while actively merging it with elements from other social partner dances like Zouk and West Coast swing and disciplines such as Modern dance and Contact Improv. During this 6 week series participants will gain an understanding of body mechanics, interaction (lead and follow), musical interpretation, and footwork.

This is a highly active class, partners are not required, however due to the nature of the topic, participants will be encouraged to rotate partnerships within the classroom.

Ideal for leaders and followers, this particular class will be taught at an intermediate level and it will focus on timing, axis and body alignment. Participants must have a clear understanding of basic patterns.  (Partners are not required, but they are encouraged.)

Salsa 301  - 3:05-4:00pm

Games & Tricks

Designed for intermediate/Advanced levels, this class will explain popular tricks, dips and games to be displayed in clubs and parties.

Students will be taught an amalgamation that includes multiple elements, counterbalancing actions, and musical interpretation. (Participants will be rotating partners during class. Dance shoes and comfortable attire is recommended.)

Students are welcome to select “a la carte”:

$35 per person at the door (2 sessions)

$20 per person at the door (1 session)
