This newsletter features our program for the month of September
Each month, we feature multiple ballroom and club style dance classes at our studio in Charlottesville. Our group classes are open to the public and are 45 mins in length.  They are progressive classes, no partners required.  These classes are only $8 at the door or $5 with a student ID.  Or ask us about our monthly group class card!

We offer a variety of specialty classes at The Dance Spot through independent instructors.  These classes cover a range of topics including specific dance styles in both social partner dance, ballroom dance and solo styles.  Some of these classes will change topics every month.  Due to the nature of these workshops, pricing is unique to each.

Flamenco 101-Technique and Choreography
 Mondays 5:30-7pm, 
Session 1: September 10th through October 1st
Session 2: October 15th through November 5th
We will continue to refine flamenco skills of posture, por de bras and more complex heel work, palmas and castanets. Make up date is November 12th. Cost is $100 for 4 class series, payable on first day of class, cash/check, or can work out a charge. There is no drop in rate for this series.  Permission of the teacher or previous flamenco experience required.

Intro to Flamenco
Wednesdays 5:15-6:30
Session 1: September 12th-October 3rd
Session 2: October 17th thru November 7th
An introduction and continuing work for returning students, of basic flamenco culture, posture, arm work and percussion skills of heel work and palmas(rhythmic clapping).  We will combine these techniques into choreography and study the first of 4 sevillanas, an ancient folk dance performed at festivals in Spain today. $75 for each 4 class series.
Indian Dance: Kathak
Tuesdays, 6:00-8:00pm
Taught by Priyanka Salona
Explore this traditional Indian dance! Priyanka's classes will be focused on Kathak, one of the eight Indian Classical dance styles hailing from North India. Classes will be a combination of technical exercises as well as choreography to pure classical and classical fusion songs.
Irish Dance
Wednesdays, 6:30-9:00pm
Taught by Jessie Baffa and Emily Cross

Note these classes are geared to children and young adults.
Preregistration required for these classes, available quarterly!
Learn to dance from Jessie Baffa T.C.R.G., Emma Cross T.C.R.G., and Megan Baffa, who all have experience competing internationally and touring the world with Michael Flatley's Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, and Feet of Flames. 
At the Baffa Academy, students are trained to dance competitively
under the worlds largest Irish dance organization, An Coimisiun Le
Rinci Gaelacha. Dancers are encouraged with professional expertise
to achieve their goals. Experience Irish culture, learn to dance, and
make new friends at the Baffa Academy of Irish Dance.

Taught by Roderick Davis
Roderick J. Davis (Instructor Balanço) began intensive training under the instruction of Mestre Panão in 2005 and within a year through hard work and dedication was able to bring Mestre Panão to his community to start Capoeira Resistência in Richmond, VA. For more than a decade Instrutor Balanço has studied and trained directly with, taught and traveled all over the US and Brazil with Mestre Panão. Through his dedication to training and his commitment to Capoeria Resistência and his Mestre, Balanço graduated to one of Mestre Panão's first American Instructors in 2015. He is continuing his training with Mestre Panão and is now teaching capoeira in Charlottesville, VA.

Hip Hop Fridays!
Friday September 7th & 28th, 7-8pm
Dana Taylor
Your regular Friday shake-down/throw-down! This hiphop dance class is open to everyone who loves to move their body. We do a nice and easy warm up to start, then turn up the heat a little bit with some across-the-floor movement, finishing the class with some fly choreography that you can use in your next dance-off!!! 
The class on the 25th with be more of a dance jam than our usual class.
Bring a big water bottle and wear whatever you want to dance in.  We usually go barefoot.  Cost: $5-15 sliding scale.
Friday, September 21st, 7-8pm
Karine Morgan
Come join the fun and learn basic dancehall moves followed by a choreographed piece. Open to all levels, no experience necessary. Come dance to reggae and dancehall music, let's get into the groove. Sliding scale fee! 
What to wear: comfortable street-style clothing. Comfortable shoes.
Friday September 21st, 6-7pm
New classes with Yoni Bliye

We are thrilled to have the wonderful Yoni Biyé join the Dance Spot family! Join him for a monthly bellydance technique class focusing on musicality, conditioning, and basic-to-intermediate transnational fusion technique. Attention will be focused on different parts of the body for a duration of time, so participants will learn to strengthen the isolation of those parts of the body in this practice.  Classes will be held the third Friday of each month.
Integral Yoga
Saturdays 11-12:30
Taught by multiple instructors 

Incorporating mindful breathing, chanting, asanas and meditation, Integral Yoga emphasizes the union between the body, the mind and the cosmos.

Open Salsa Workshop
 Date: Every Tuesday in September, 8-9pm
Place: ACAC Downtown, 111 Monticello Ave, Charlottesville, VA 22902
These classes are open to everyone, and FREE for ACAC members. This month we will focus on Tango music, develop your skill of partner dance, it will provide you with a substantial set of patterns and amalgamations that are sure to give you the confidence necessary to own the dance floor at your next event.

Classes are highly active and based on a progressive format, therefore students are highly encourage to sign up in advance. Each month a new dance topic will be introduce. The format of each class will be divided into 2 section; the first 40 minutes are for individual work (Pattern recognition and stamina), and the second 20 minutes will be partner work (Connections, lead & follow). Everyone is welcome, no experience require.

Bachatango is a popular hybrid dance that combines the Caribbean style of bachata from the Dominican Republic with Argentine Tango. This highly improvisational dance allows the performers to play not only with different hand holds and styling, but also games with footwork. No previous experience is required for this class. Partners are encouraged, but not necessary.

Welcome to Zaltandi, Charlottesville's first World Dance Festival!
Zaltandi is a performance showcase of various movement styles from all ethnicities that hightlights the beauty of cultures and diversity of our community through dance.

Join us at Ix Art Park on Sunday October 21st at 3pm to kick off the festivities which will culminate in an open, all inclusive, social dance party, Dance For Equality. 

This event is FREE to the public, all ages welcome.
